Metabolic abnormalities during treatment are of great concern in patients with bipolar disorder. Regular screening for mood stabilization and metabolic side effects of psychiatric medications can improve adherence and help to prevent relapse.
While the roles and responsibilities of front-line nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in both psychiatric and primary care practices are to manage the medical as well as the psychiatric issues of patients with bipolar disorder, a recent CME Outfitters survey (N = 108) demonstrated that nearly one-quarter (22.5%) of respondents do not regularly discuss metabolic issues or monitor patients for metabolic complications that may be secondary to psychiatric medications used to treat bipolar disorder. Over 20% responded that they do not regularly discuss or encourage lifestyle changes in these patients.
