Statement of Need

Bipolar disorder is characterized by the cyclical occurrence of elevated (manic or hypomanic) and depressed mood states. The illness, which includes the bipolar I and bipolar II subtypes, exacts a heavy toll in terms of quality of life, functioning, morbidity, comorbidity, and mortality.1 A special challenge for diagnosis and treatment is bipolar depression.

A number of studies suggest that patients with bipolar disorder are often misdiagnosed on initial presentation, and most often with major depressive disorder. Treatment of these patients may be ineffective or possibly worsen outcomes by precipitating symptoms of mania or hypomania. Reasons may include incomplete history, lack of patient reporting an accurate history, or the presence of psychiatric comorbidity, such as anxiety or substance use disorders.2

Education to front-line nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in both psychiatric and primary care settings can help to sharpen diagnostic skills and improve treatment choices, as well as the therapeutic relationship with bipolar patients and their families.

In this neuroscienceCME live activity, learners will be able to engage in real time with expert faculty and their peers to gain broader insights into the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar depression.
