Statement of Need

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness in older adults. Beyond age, there are multiple genetic and environmental risk factors that have been implicated in AMD including smoking, gender, race, cardiovascular disease and diet. Stargardt macular degeneration, Best disease, and cone-rod dystrophies are inherited diseases that cause vision loss in children and young adults.

It is important that ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other health care professional recognize the clinical presentations of the different macular degenerations to facilitate an accurate diagnosis and to better understand the genetic and environmental risk factors that impact disease risk and progression.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

• Describe and contrast the clinical presentations of the different forms of macular degeneration including AMD, Stargardt disease, Best and cone-rod dystrophies.
• Define the genetic and environmental/lifestyle factors that affect macular degeneration risk and progression.
• Identify the diagnoses and prognoses for different forms of macular degeneration.
