Statement of Need

There are three major domains of assessing efficacy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA): 1) signs and symptoms, 2) improvement in patient function, and 3) inhibition of structural progression. Accordingly, some assessment of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) is a necessary component of measuring RA activity. Nevertheless, clinicians rarely use formal assessment of PROs as part of routine clinical practice. Use of PROs may improve clinician and patient perspectives of disease status and achievable outcomes. One particular feature of PRO assessments is their ability to capture health-related quality of life (HRQoL) information, which can help clinicians determine treatment efficacy. Even with the benefits of knowing formal HRQoL data, many clinicians do not use these data in their management of patients with RA. In addition, many clinicians feel unprepared to successfully counsel patients to change their behaviors to self-monitor their status, adhere to medication, and exercise.

This CME Outfitters Expert Interview shares best practices, provides resources, and encourages clinicians to integrate evidence-based models, tools, and objective measures to optimize clinical outcomes in RA, such as reducing pain and disability.

Activity Goal

This educational activity centers on the CMEO Make-One-Change Statement. This statement is crafted from pertinent quality measures or clinical guidelines as a performance challenge to all participants. The Make-One-Change Statement for this activity is:

Incorporate patient-reported outcomes regarding health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in management of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • As part of daily clinical practice, outline and apply evidence-based models, tools, and objective measures to monitor and improve outcomes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • Integrate assessments of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as a measure of RA health and disease progression and as a strategy to encourage patients with RA to make a “commitment to change” in current behaviors, such as in self-monitoring, adhering to medications, and exercising.
  • Utilize patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures to identify the issues and outcomes that are of utmost concern for your patients with RA, to support improved shared decision-making and incorporation of HRQoL data into care across the continuum.

Financial Support

This activity is supported by an educational grant from AbbVie Inc.

Target Audience

Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other health care professionals treating patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
