Statement of Need

For individuals with chronic pain, and the health care providers (HCPs) managing their condition, 2020 was an especially challenging year. Limited access to care stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic forced treatment for many patients to be delayed or stopped, leading to negative consequences including increase in pain, disability, and depression. In addition, restrictions on refills, overly strict telemedicine requirements, and pharmacy chain policies have further contributed to needless pain and delayed prescriptions, subsequently pushing patients out of the doctor’s office and into the streets in search of pain relief. This tragic response has created an even greater overall public health threat, and the need for HCPs to be flexible and learn the what and the how in pain assessment and pain management and tools to engage patients in the long-term management of their pain.

In this live Q&A, Dr. Stanos addresses your questions about mechanisms of pain, best practice strategies for optimizing safe and competent prescribing, and how to best educate patients about their pain and engage them in their treatment plans.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

• Apply knowledge of acute and chronic pain pathways and underlying mechanisms to clinical assessment and appropriate management of pain.
• Incorporate two best practice strategies to optimize safe and competent prescribing and minimize potential for abuse and diversion.
• Educate patients about their pain to optimize safe and effective, multimodal treatment plans.
• Identify risk factors and clinical presentation of opioid use disorder (OUD) in patients prescribed opioids for acute and chronic pain.
