The determination of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is subjective and can made by a clinician only after taking into account factors that affect sexual functioning such as age, physical condition, and the context of a person's life.(1) Women often present with the complaint of loss of desire, but with very little awareness of how, when, or why this problem occurred. It is therefore of utmost importance that clinicians take the time to document a patient's sexual history.1 Taking even a brief sexual history during a new patient visit is very effective and indicates to the patient that the discussion of sexual concerns is an appropriate and routine component of an office visit, and that their concerns regarding sexual health and/or sexual dysfunction are "normal" and healthy. When physicians share this routine with patients, it can help reduce anxiety and put them at ease. Many health-related conditions, life events, or developmental milestones put patients at higher risk for sexual problems and provide opportunity to inquire about associated changes in sexual function.(1)
This CME Outfitters medical simulation puts you—the life-long learner—in the "driver's seat" as the decision-making clinician who is providing care for a virtual patient across two or three clinical encounters. As such, you have the opportunity to put your knowledge into practice with this virtual patient, and then translate your experience to your practice with actual patients with HSDD.
