Statement of Need

Fibromyalgia is a relatively common, wide-spread pain syndrome, estimated to affect 10% of women in a doctor's office at any given time. Fibromyalgia can present in a number of ways, "making each patient with [fibromyalgia] unique, complex, and potentially challenging to treat."

Educational efforts must start by improving not only recognition of the syndrome, but also clinician acceptance that it even exists as a disease entity. Although the situation seems to be improving, many clinicians remain skeptical that fibromyalgia is a legitimate condition, and this undoubtedly affects recognition and diagnosis. Survey data suggest that nearly 3 years and up to 4 physicians are required to provide an accurate diagnosis. Physicians need education regarding the growing evidence base regarding the neurobiological underpinnings of fibromyalgia and how these pathological findings translate into the clinical manifestations of the disease. Early recognition and prompt, appropriate treatment can improve health outcomes and quality of life for patients with fibromyalgia.

Activity Goal

To improve physician performance in the diagnosis and management of patients with fibromyalgia by utilizing multiple decision points in a real-world patient case.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Integrate knowledge of the neurobiology of fibromyalgia with the recognition and diagnosis of clinical symptoms.

  • Utilize available assessment tools and diagnostic guidelines to provide prompt and accurate differential diagnosis of fibromyalgia.

  • Weigh the evidence-based risks and benefits of available and emerging treatments to develop an individualized, multimodal treatment plan for patients with fibromyalgia.

Financial Support

Supported by an educational grant from Pfizer Inc.

Target Audience

Physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, certified case managers, and other health care professionals interested in the management of fibromyalgia.
