In a nationwide survey, 75% of individuals with recent moderate to severe pain had seen a doctor for their pain, yet less than half of those (44%) had received adequate pain control. In a nation with increasing prevalence of diabetic disease,(1) many clinicians need more information regarding the pathophysiology of pain present in diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).
Although guidelines for DPN diagnosis and management exist(2) and numerous pharmacological agents are approved to treat various forms of chronic pain, a gap exists regarding firm DPN diagnosis that would allow clinicians to incorporate evidence- and outcomes-based treatment. Because of the effects of pain on sleep and vice versa, comprehensive management of DPN requires investigation into sleep hygiene, an underperformed assessment in its own right. Physicians and their medical teams play an important role in educating patients, families, and caregivers, regarding optimal strategies for managing diabetes and DPN.
This neuroscienceCME Medical Simulation addresses pain assessment and tailored, multimodal management of DPN, as well strategies for patient education and coordinating the optimal management of care across the continuum.

Address gaps in the diagnosis and multimodal management of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and any comorbid occurrence of poor sleep health.
At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:
- Establish a firm diagnosis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) based on clinical and laboratory findings that also rules out other potential causes of peripheral pain.
- Assess for sleep disturbances in patients with chronic pain and treat any diagnoses in a tailored treatment plan to improve sleep health.
- Design and institute a multimodal treatment plan for diabetic peripheral neuropathy that includes use of pharmacologic agents recommended by consensus guidelines, appropriate patient education, and control of underlying diabetic illness.
