The term stroke is most commonly used by both physicians and the general public to refer to any one of the diverse group of disorders resulting from either ischemia or hemorrhage within the central nervous system. Stroke is the third leading cause of death after cardiovascular disease and cancer and is a primary cause of long-term disability in much of the industrialized world. Stroke is also the most common neurological condition necessitating hospitalization.(1)
Yet even with the risks defined and the prevention strategies proven, the incidence of stroke has not decreased significantly in recent years. Although they are scientifically validated and widely accepted, strategies for stroke prevention such as lifestyle changes, weight management, smoking cessation, and control of hypertension and diabetes are not effectively implemented.(2)
This neuroscienceCME Snack presents an informative video interview with leading stroke expert José Biller, MD, in an important review of the serious manifestations of stroke and a clinical update for all clinicians.
