Statement of Need

Concussions account for nearly 15% of all sport-related injuries in high school athletes, yet many more generally go unreported.(1) The symptom presentation, diagnosis, and clinical management of the athlete with concussion can be challenging. Clinicians need to become more proactive in discussions with patients and more familiar with the scope of symptomatology that patents can demonstrate. Timely assessment and intervention using currently recommended treatment approaches can prevent an injury from becoming a disability.(2)

This neuroscienceCME Compass Points™ article highlights the symptoms, diagnosis, clinical management, and evidence-based guidelines for mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) for clinicians. In addition, this article provides suggestions for prevention, as well as numerous resources for clinicians, parents, coaches, and athletes.
