Statement of Need

If you have not yet heard about the neuropeptide orexin, also known as hypocretin, you will be hearing about it soon. There is growing excitement about orexin and the scientific and clinical discussions related to implications of orexin in sleep medicine. This Compass Points™ article provides an overview of the discovery of orexin, its purported physiological actions, and ways in which its biochemical pathway represents a therapeutic target for pharmacologic innovation, particularly in narcolepsy. The information presented can be used to inform clinical discussion and handle questions from patients with narcolepsy, a patient population that is often highly motivated and heavily involved in maintaining awareness of the condition.

  • Mieda M, Sakurai T. Overview of orexin/hypocretin system. Prog Brain Res. 2012;198:5-14. PMID: 22813966.
  • Nishino S, Sagawa Y. The neurochemistry of awakening: findings from sleep disorder narcolepsy. Int Rev Neurobiol. 2010;93:229-255. PMID: 20970008.

    Activity Goal

To educate clinicians about the link between the orexin/hypocretin system and narcolepsy so that they can provide accurate patient information.

    Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

    • Identify the role of the neuropeptide orexin in processes of wakefulness and arousal.
    • Educate patients with narcolepsy on the role of orexin in the pathophysiology of the disorder.

    Financial Support

This activity is supported by CME Outfitters, LLC.

    Target Audience

Physicians and other health care providers who are interested in the advancing discoveries about the role of neurotransmitters in sleep medicine.
