Statement of Need

“[I wish] that more people would understand that I have a biological condition that requires medical treatment and stop giving me advice to try different diets, alternative remedies, and what-have-you.” - Clea H.

This statement from a patient with narcolepsy is a plea for legitimacy and better care. Truly, narcolepsy is a legitimate, clinical condition that is characterized by excessive sleepiness, disrupted sleep, in some patients, cataplexy; narcolepsy affects approximately 1.37 per 100,000 people in the United States. Despite this, narcolepsy is underdiagnosed and too often poorly diagnosed, as is highlighted in the clinical gaps documented in the Awareness and Knowledge in Narcolepsy (AWAKEN) study.

This neuroscienceCME Snack™ is aimed at helping clinicians gain insight and skills to improve the detection and pharmacological management of narcolepsy. It works to increase awareness of the burden of illness associated with narcolepsy, highlights the detection of excessive sleepiness (a cardinal symptom of narcolepsy), and teaches the use of evidence-based approaches to treat narcolepsy.
