Brain resiliency is the ability to resist decompensation in the face of stress factors. This ability of the brain to relieve stress, recuperate, and bounce back is essential for normal brain functioning. In schizophrenia, with each psychotic episode the brain takes longer to recuperate. Blocking the neurobiological cycle that leads to the psychotic episode protects the brain and allows for recovery. Current oral agents, when taken inconsistently, provide suboptimal protection for the brain and result in minimal stress resilience. Continuous protection of the brain may lead to an increased ability to handle stress resulting in improved functionality in daily activities for patients with schizophrenia. In this evidence-based psychCME TALK activity, the experts will explore the concept of brain resiliency and the impact that enhanced resiliency can have on patient outcomes in schizophrenia.
To examine the concept of brain resiliency and the impact of enhanced resiliency on patient outcomes in schizophrenia.
At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the concept of brain resiliency.
- Describe the relationship between improvement of brain resiliency and improved functional outcomes in schizophrenia.
- Evaluate new treatment options that may enhance brain resiliency and lead to improved long-term outcomes in schizophrenia.
Physicians, PAs, NPs, nurses, psychologists, social workers, certified case managers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals with an interest in mental health.
