Dr. Harvey is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He was formerly professor of Psychiatry at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and Chief Psychologist at Mt. Sinai Hospital. He received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from SUNY at Stony Brook in 1982. He is the author of over 700 scientific papers and abstracts and he has written over 30 book chapters. He is a widely cited author whose work has been cited more than 400 times per year for the past decade, with over 1,500 citations of his work in 2009 alone. He has given more than 1,500 presentations at scientific conferences and medical education events. He has edited 5 books and written 4 books on topics of psychological assessment, schizophrenia, and aging. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (Fellow), the Collegium Internationale Neuropharmacologium (Fellow) , the Society for Research in Psychopathology (Founding Member), the Society for Biological Psychiatry, International Neuropsychological Society, the Schizophrenia International Research Society (Founding Director), and the International Society for Clinical Trials and Methodology (Founding Member).

His research has focused for years on cognition and functioning and he has written extensively on aging in schizophrenia, functional impairments in the illness, and the cognitive effects of typical and atypical antipsychotics, as well as studying the effects of cognitive enhancing agents in various conditions, including schizophrenia, dementia, and traumatic brain injury. He directs a biennial conference on cognition that is an official satellite of the International Congress on Schizophrenia Research.
