Did You Get Smart About Antibiotics? Time to Refocus on Antibiotic Stewardship and Antibiotic Discovery

Antibiotic resistance is a serious national and global public health issue that the World Health Organization has identified as 1 of the 3 greatest threats to human health. Our past and current antibiotic use patterns created and sustain the problem, and the hazards associated with the problem are only escalated by the fact that there are very few new antibiotic agents being developed and approved. The good news is that prudent antibiotic prescribing can minimize the emergence of resistance and protect patients. Further, we can organize to spur new drug research and development, as called for by the 2010 launch of the 10 x '20 initiative by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)...

Statement of Need
The STandards for BipoLar Excellence (STABLE) project outlined 15 evidence-based measures for quality assessment and improvement of care for patients with bipolar disorder (BPD). One of these relates to lipid measurement and assesses "the percentage of patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder and treated with an atypical antipsychotic agent who receive at least one assessment for hyperlipidemia within the initial 16 weeks of treatment."...

Activity Goal
To increase clinician knowledge of and performance against the STABLE measure related to assessment of hyperlipidemia in patients with bipolar disorder who are being treated with an atypical antipsychotic agent.

Credit Information
This activity offers CE credit for:

  • Physicians (CME)
  • Nurses (CNE)
  • Pharmacists (ACPE)
  • Psychologists (APA)
  • Social Workers (NASW)
  • Certified Case Managers (CCMC)

All other clinicians will either receive a CME Attendance Certificate or may choose any of the types of CE credit being offered.
