Albert J. Stunkard Speaks Out About Night Eating Syndrome

Albert J. Stunkard, MD, a pioneer in eating disorders psychiatry, granted a Thanksgiving interview in which he expressed great concern that deserves our close attention: Night eating syndrome (NES), which he first described in 1955, remains underdiagnosed. The U.S. obesity epidemic requires that clinicians learn more about NES, whose prevalence recent papers document at 8% – 27% among obese patients. "Almost none of the obese NES patients who came to me because of their obesity have had their NES recognized and they had usually been looking for help for over a year," he elaborates...
