Joy Bartnett Leffler, MLA, NASW, CSE, Joins CME Outfitters as Director of Educational Research and Effectiveness

New Director has over 30 years experience in medical writing, medical informatics, and senior management of medical education companies.

March 17, 2011

CME Outfitters, LLC, (CMEO), an award-winning, accredited provider of multidisciplinary continuing medical education (CE), is pleased to announce that Joy Bartnett Leffler, MLA, NASW, CSE, has joined CME Outfitters as Director of Educational Research and Effectiveness. Ms. Leffler has over 30 years experience in medical writing, medical informatics, and senior management of medical education companies, both non-profit and for-profit. Most recently, she was Director of Education and Informatics for the Movement Disorders Education Fund (WE MOVE), and Vice President of Information Services at the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD). Ms. Leffler also owned and operated MedEdInfo, a successful medical communications company in New York.

Joy began her career as a biomedical research assistant at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, while attending PhD level courses in physiologic biochemistry. During the 1980s, Joy founded MedEdInfo, a biomedical communications firm; in that capacity, she participated as an author and editor for medical textbooks, directories, numerous journal articles, monographs, and newsletters. In 1993, Ms. Leffler joined the National Organization of Rare Disorders, Inc., as a medical writer. Later, as Vice President of Information Services, she was responsible for driving change in the timely delivery of accurate medical information to patients and physicians in rare disease communities around the world (www.rarediseases.org). Most recently, Joy served as Director of Education and Informatics at WE MOVE and was responsible for the company's ACCME-accredited with commendation CME program on the Movement Disorder Virtual University at www.mdvu.org, as well as its patient-directed website at www.wemove.org.

Ms. Leffler was recently a member of the Executive Committee for the European Initiative for the Creation of the European Database for Rare Disorders in Paris, France; member of the Executive Committee for the National Council for Health Professional Education in Genetics; the MedBiquitous Standards Committee, and Executive Board Member of the American Brain Coalition. Named in February 2000 as one of the top 25 industry leaders in online health informatics, Ms. Leffler continues to channel her energy and experience into the field of educational effectiveness and improved patient outcomes.

Joy has enjoyed a rich and varied speaking career including presentations to the Drug Information Association in Washington D.C., the Medical Library Association regional conference in Hartford, CT, and three NORD Conferences in Texas, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. In 1997, she participated with 17 other national medical informatics experts in U.S. Government Accounting Office's (GAO) study on Eliminating the Barriers to Patient Information Access.

Sharon A. Tordoff, Managing Partner at CME Outfitters, stated: "We are excited to have Joy join our team. CME Outfitters recently had its first publication in CE Measures documenting the positive outcomes achieved for a sleep-wake disorders initiative and we anticipate Joy will continue to push our group as we raise our own bar regarding evaluation of our educational activities and also help us to increase the level of science in our educational research."
