neuroscienceCME TV SERIES PREMIERE
Don't miss the premiere of neuroscienceCME TV on March 21, 2007!
neuroscienceCME TV is a one-hour live, interactive satellite TV activity during which leading experts discuss clinically relevant, evidence-based issues facing mental health practitioners. Each broadcast's interactivity is enhanced by offering a Q&A segment during which the faculty presenters can respond to audience comments and questions posed via e-mail, fax, or phone. CME Outfitters has also developed a web-based instant polling feature that allows live webcast participants a chance to provide real-time input.

Program Title: Weight Gain with the Atypicals: How to Screen, Monitor, and Intervene

Target Audience: Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, social workers, certified case managers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals with an interest in mental health.

Overview: This activity is designed to help physicians treating patients with schizophrenia to be aware of the impact of overweight and obesity on their patients' wellness. The faculty will explore the challenges clinicians face when managing weight gain associated with atypical antipsychotic medications. They will review recent guidelines and develop strategies to screen, monitor, and intervene to improve outcomes in patients with schizophrenia. Participants will learn ways to minimize risk from weight gain and will also learn the proper technique for measuring waist circumference and translating the measurement into cardiovascular risk for these patients.

SATELLITE SITE NEWS
CMEO welcomes BECKY RHEA to the SATELLITE SITE COORDINATOR TEAM. BECKY is the new site coordinator for the Harold Jordan Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

SATELLITE SITE PROFILE
This month we salute the staff of the New Orleans Adolescent Hospital, who have prevailed through the post-Katrina period to provide the only public psychiatric beds currently available in New Orleans.

Hats off to site coordinator Arnette Alston who inspired us with the information she provided for this profile.

The modern-day New Orleans Adolescent Hospital (NOAH) has a rich and storied history as a clinical institution. In 1781, the site where the hospital is located was a sugar plantation, and in 1870, the facility was known as the Sedgewich Military Hospital. In 1981, The Louisiana Legislature established NOAH to provide 24-hour inpatient care and treatment to emotionally disturbed and mentally ill adolescents and children.

Before Hurricane Katrina, NOAH functioned as a 30-bed hospital for children ages 5 to 18, and operated with an annual budget of $15 million. Patients were referred for admission through NOAH's Crisis Clinic. It was the only facility in New Orleans to provide inpatient mental health care and 24-hour crisis services to adolescents. School services were provided on campus for grades K-to-12 by a joint venture between the Louisiana Office of Mental Health (OMH) and the Department of Education.

In 2004, NOAH's inpatient services admitted 240 youths and its outpatient clinics treated 1,400. Two days before Katrina crashed ashore in late August 2005, 17 children were evacuated from NOAH to Greenwell Springs Hospital in Jackson, Louisiana. More than 100 staff members also evacuated to Jackson with these children. NOAH reopened on November 7, 2005, as a temporary outpatient clinic.

The greater New Orleans mental healthcare infrastructure was crippled in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. More than 300 psychiatric beds across the area were lost as a result of hospital or departmental closings. Estimates in early 2006 projected that only 140 of 617 primary care physicians returned to practice after Katrina and that only 22 of 196 psychiatrists continued to practice.(1) NOAH reopened on November 7, 2005, as a temporary outpatient clinic.

In June 2006 the patients and staff who had evacuated to Jackson, Louisiana were able to return to the NOAH campus. Since then, inpatient services at NOAH consist of 15 child and adolescent psychiatric hospital beds, and two community clinics located in the Greater New Orleans area. In August of 2006 NOAH converted 20 additional beds to treat adults. These remain the only inpatient psychiatric services available in the city. A Crisis Intervention Unit at NOAH was also set up to administer treatment and refer patients to group homes.
