Shirlene RogersWednesday, May 2, 2007, was designated National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day. This national screening day offered individuals an opportunity to receive a free and anonymous screening for anxiety and depressive disorders at numerous locations throughout the United States and Canada. National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day was coordinated by Freedom from Fear, a national not-for-profit mental health advocacy association.

Improving the Odds in the Battle Against Alcohol Dependence

CMEO and neuroscienceCME TV are currently offering two activities focused on the management of patients with alcohol dependence. Improving the Odds in the Battle Against Alcohol Dependence is an archived CMEO program that goes hand-in-hand with the June 20th live satellite broadcast on neuroscienceCME TV titled Moving Addiction Therapy into the 21st Century: Practical Management Options.

Although the live date is set for Moving Addiction Therapy into the 21st Century: Practical Management Options, you can decide what date and time your group wants to participate in the archived program. Improving the Odds in the Battle Against Alcohol Dependence is available until December 31, 2007, by phone, webcast, or podcast.

Registered groups of 10 or more clinicians can take advantage of the free Pizza Incentive Program for both activities. Fax completed Advanced Group Registration forms for each to 240.243.1033 or contact Shirlene at 877.CME.PROS. Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Certified Case Managers, Psychologists, and Social Workers can all receive CE credit at no cost for participating in these activities. In order to guarantee on-time receipt of the pizza coupons, group registrations must be received at least one week before your preferred activity date.

SATELLITE SITE PROFILES

Chester Mental Health Center in Chester, Illinois, and Central New York Psychiatric Center in Marcy, New York

Our thanks to Mark Troue, site coordinator, Chester Mental Health Center, and Marie Wlock, site coordinator, CNYPC for sending us information about their respective institutions.

Background: This month we are profiling two satellite sites, Chester Mental Health Center and Central New York Psychiatric Center. Both of these facilities are forensic mental health centers. Forensic mental health centers provide services for patients who have been referred by the courts for assessment or who have been declared as Not Criminally Responsible or Unfit to Stand Trial by the criminal justice system. Caring for these patients can be especially challenging, as the staff must meet the individual's therapeutic needs while addressing legal, security, and public safety issues.

Chester Mental Health Center is the only maximum security mental health facility in the state of Illinois. Chester Mental Health Center has 280 beds for adult males with forensic and/or behavior management issues who cannot be maintained at other state facilities. Patients are referred from courts or transferred from other Illinois hospitals. Services offered include pharmacotherapy, individual and group psychotherapy, and behavioral therapy.

Central New York Psychiatric Center (CNYPC) is a 210-bed maximum security forensic psychiatric hospital. It is the only New York state facility where male and female patients may be involuntarily hospitalized in accordance with provisions of the New York State Corrections Law. This inpatient facility provides acute patient assessment, care, and treatment for both sentenced inmates and pre-trial detainees.

Send Shirlene news from your team and be profiled in an upcoming edition of Network Connection Update
