Satellite Site Profile
Blanchfield Army Community Hospital, Fort Campbell, Kentucky
Our thanks to Stephanie Washington, site coordinator for sending in information about her institution.
Blanchfield Army Community Hospital in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, supports the Fort Campbell population of approximately 220,000 members of the military services, their families, and retirees. It is named for Colonel Florence A. Blanchfield who served meritoriously in both World War I and World War II as a member of the Army Nurse Corps. During this period nurses were denied the rights, privileges, and pay that their male counterparts of equal rank received.
In 1943 Colonel Blanchfield was named the seventh superintendent of the Army Nurse Corps and, under her administration, the Corps expanded from 1,000 to 57,000 nurses. These women served in theaters in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.
As superintendent, one of Col. Blanchfield’s primary goals was to achieve full military rank and privileges for all military nurses. As a result of her determined efforts, the Army-Navy Nurse Act of 1947 authorized placement of the Army Nurse Corps in the regular army and granted its nurses all of the benefits of military rank including officers’ commissions, equal pay, full retirement privileges, and dependents’ allowances.
Colonel Blanchfield died and was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in 1971. In 1982, the hospital at Fort Campbell was named in her honor, marking the only instance where an army hospital has been named after a nurse.
Send Shirlene news from your team and be profiled in an upcoming edition of Network Connection Update
