FROM THE CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE CENTER:
Emerging Issues in Neuropathic Pain

RESPONSES FROM OUR LAST COMPASS QUESTION™

CLINICAL RESOURCES…WITH A TWIST

FROM THE CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE CENTER
Emerging Issues in Neuropathic Pain
August is National Pain Awareness month, and in this issue of Clinical Compass we will address a particularly chronic and difficult to treat problem - neuropathic pain.

Neuropathic pain is a significant public health problem, affecting an estimated 75-150 million people in the United States alone. It is associated with substantial disability in up to 30% of patients and has a considerable negative impact on quality of life. Neuropathic pain carries significant cost in terms of use of medical resources, lost work, and work productivity.

Patients with neuropathic pain commonly experience comorbid medical illnesses and take a number of medications, which can complicate treatment, as well as depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances, which can exacerbate symptoms and lead to worse outcome…

RESPONSES FROM OUR LAST COMPASS QUESTION™
In the 08.14.07 issue of Clinical Compass we posed the question: "What barriers do you face in asking patients about sleep-wake problems?" and the neuroscienceCME learning community responded:
10% - Lack of time
35% - Do not have standardized questions to guide this conversation
24% - Patients do not perceive sleep to be an important health issue
28% - Lack of physician education on sleep-wake medicine
3% - No response

Clinical Resources...With a Twist
Soon we'll be debuting a new editorial feature on Clinical Compass. This feature is driven by reader input indicating that clinical scales, surveys, and assessment tools are not always routinely used, either because they are not available, not well understood, or not feasible due to lack of time. While the editors at Clinical Compass can't add extra time to your day, we can do our best to address some of the other barriers.

To that end, we'll be publishing links to key clinical tools on a periodic basis. These links will lead to printable forms that may be downloaded and used in your practice. We'll also provide valuable information on leveraging these resources to optimize patient outcomes. But beyond that, we'll be sharing fascinating insights about these tools and the people who developed them. We'll uncover their history and evolution, as well as the evidence supporting their validity. You'll learn "the rest of the story" behind these tools, and our hope is that this information will both intrigue you and encourage greater utilization.

Look for this feature in upcoming issues of Clinical Compass. We look forward to your feedback and suggestions.
