RESPONSES FROM OUR LAST COMPASS QUESTIONS™

FROM THE CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE CENTER
1st Annual Chairs in Psychiatry Summit: A "Tour-de-Force of Psychiatry" in Hilton Head, SC
June 27, 2008, marks the start of the first annual Chairs in Psychiatry Summit, an intensive 2 1/2-day master class in which chairpeople from 30 pre-eminent Departments of Psychiatry in the United States will highlight advancements in the field. Says Dr. William Bunney, Distinguished Professor and Della Martin Chair of Psychiatry at University of California - Irvine, "The Chairs in Psychiatry Summit represents an outstanding educational opportunity with a high quality, internationally recognized research faculty."

Faculty of the Chair Summit will present cutting-edge, often yet-to-be-published, translational and clinical research with the potential to substantially advance evidence-based patient care in both adolescent and adult psychiatry. Presentations will cover a "broad range of vital topics in mental health" according to Dr. Peter Buckley, Professor and Chairman, Department of Psychiatry at Medical College of Georgia. Topics will range from basic neuroscience to novel management strategies and will include clinical case challenges. In each presentation, faculty will emphasize the translation of emerging data into clinical care.

Topics to be presented include, but are not limited to:
  • Genetics and genomics of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
  • Neurobiology of psychiatric and pervasive developmental disorders
  • Brain imaging in geriatric depression and Alzheimer's disease
  • Emerging approaches to the pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management of mood disorders
  • Borderline personality disorder and impulsivity
  • Advances in the management of eating disorders
  • Strategies for addressing medical and psychiatric comorbidities
  • Cultural competency, special populations, and individualizing treatment
  • Developments in the neurobiology and treatment of substance abuse
  • Cognitive aspects of mental illnesses
  • Adolescent mental health
  • Emerging therapies for treatment-resistant patients
  • Recovery in schizophrenia
  • Ethical issues in psychiatry

"This is a 'tour-de-force' of psychiatry, covering a broad range of vital topics in mental health"
--Peter F. Buckley, MD

Presentations will be given during parallel symposia throughout the meeting, with ample opportunity for question and answer and interactive discussion. In addition, breakout sessions will be held to foster small-group discussions related to clinical challenges in a more informal setting. This format will provide a rare opportunity for psychiatrists from a range of clinical settings and backgrounds to discuss important clinical issues at the cutting edge of the field. These forums will help psychiatrists to create communities of practice as participants learn of advancements in the field that they can integrate into their practices and share with their colleagues.

This year, Dr. William E. Bunney will receive the First Annual Chair Achievement Award for his scientific accomplishments in the field. His presentation will address metabolic and signaling dysregulation in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and will review up-and-coming strategies for further elucidating the genetic basis of these disorders.

This Chair Summit, the first of its kind, "will provide clinicians in the community with the unique opportunity to interact with the leaders in American psychiatry -- literally the investigators and scientists who have made the discoveries that are being translated on a regular basis into practice," says the Chairman of the Summit Dr. Charles Nemeroff, Reunette W. Harris Professor and Chairman, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.
